April 2, 2012:

We have moved into new offices at 628 Carnarvon Street, New Westminster – right next door to the old main office. We’re now all together in the same building and we have a bit of extra space to accommodate growth. We also now have our own parking area so visitors will no longer have to pay for on street parking – just ask us for the gate key when you get here.

Subsea Excavator Update

The Cellula/Trinity Subsea Excavator successfully completed its first excavation operation in November-December, 2011. Two excavation tools were used – a dual pick-cutter cutterhead and a standard shovel.

Cellula Robotics and Trinity Offshore Technical Services have recently purchased and upgraded an ROV-deployed subsea Excavator from Nautilus Minerals Inc. This machine was originally developed by Cellula and Trinity in 2005, and it was used for sampling and subsea cutting-test purposes on Nautilus’s Solwara-1 orebody in 2006. Cellula and Trinity are upgrading the Excavator and we plan to offer it for general use in subsea mineral exploration and civil engineering applications.

Seamless Stitching of Images

Dr. Peter Hampton, a controls engineer here at Cellula Robotics Ltd., has recently co-authored a conference paper titled “Seamless Stitching of Images Based on a Haar Wavelet 2D Integration Method” with Ioana Sevcenco and Dr. Pan Agathoklis of the University of Victoria.

This paper is on mosaicking images in a manner that hides the borders of the sub-images. The paper focuses on photographic images, but has potential for generating seamless maps from underwater surveys. The process is resilient to misregistrations of adjacent images. Further, the computation cost scales linearly with the number of pixels, allowing for much larger data sets to be processed than competing methods.

Cellula Robotics is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Hampton, PhD as a new Control Systems Engineer. Peter’s dissertation at UVic was related to the novel adaptive control of a large optical telescope; his addition to the team will enhance our capabilities in signal processing, control systems, electrical design & system modelling.

We have also leased some new office space a block away at 604 Columbia St in New Westminster. The new “Cellula South” houses our electrical, software and controls team. To contact this office, phone (604) 630-5577.

Tristan Crees was hired as a Senior Control Systems Engineer. Tristan has 15 years of experience in robotic systems development. He was previously at ISE where he managed the fabrication of the two Explorer class AUVs deployed to the Canadian Arctic in March of 2010.
